The 28 Quiet Winners
Capital-efficient machines flying under the radar
The Criteria
From an analysis of 1,691 US venture-backed companies who raised 20M+ in 2025, I identified 28 that meet strict efficiency criteria:
Revenue efficiency: Above $0.50 per $1 raised
Revenue: Above $10M
Team size: Under 150 employees
These aren’t the companies getting TechCrunch headlines. They’re building businesses where customers pay more than VCs invest.

What They Have in Common
1. Sector skew: 11 of 28 (39%) are Consumer B2C. The “boring” sectors dominate — protein bars, skincare, shoes, milk.
2. Lean teams: Median team size is ~70 employees. David Protein runs $180M in revenue with 10 people.
3. Capital discipline: Many bootstrapped early, raised late. They didn’t need VC money to find product-market fit.
4. Simple products: Most aren’t building complex enterprise software. They’re selling things people understand immediately.
The Standouts
Most Efficient: Grüns — $300M revenue on $35M raised (8.57x). Gummy vitamins.
Highest Revenue per Employee: David Protein — $18M per person. 10 employees, $180M revenue.
Largest Revenue: Underdog Fantasy — $500M revenue. Fantasy sports.
Leanest Team with Scale: David Protein — 10 employees generating $180M.
Most Surprising: Nudge — Healthcare company with 24 employees doing $274M. Proves healthcare CAN be efficient.
The Pattern
These companies prove you don’t need $100M to build a $100M revenue business.
They raised $20-40M. They generate $40-100M+ in revenue. They run lean teams.
Most are selling simple consumer products — not enterprise software, not AI, not healthcare tech.
Capital efficiency compounds. A company that generates $0.50 per dollar at $10M revenue will generate $0.50 per dollar at $100M revenue.
The discipline is the moat.
The Uncomfortable Question
Are these quiet winners not getting more VC attention because they’re bad businesses?
Or because they don’t need the money — and VCs can’t deploy capital into them?
The best businesses might be the ones that don’t need you.
